Toothache RemediesToothaches and tooth pain are hard to ignore and can put a huge damper on your day. A toothache can be caused by several things, from having popcorn stuck in your gum to something more serious like a tooth infection. When a toothache doesn't disappear in a day or two, it is important to schedule an appointment with our dentists as soon as possible to help figure out the root cause of your symptoms. Meanwhile, you can treat minor toothache irritation with several tried-and-tested home remedies.

Over the Counter Treatments

The most common cause of oral pain is toothache, and nearly everyone experiences one at some point during their lives. A good place to begin is with over-the-counter remedies, which can help relieve some tooth pain. Anti-inflammatory drugs and benzocaine topical treatments are two common OTC treatments for toothache. Topical benzocaine is a local anesthetic that's applied directly to the gums or teeth, providing a temporary numbing sensation that can relieve toothache pain. OTC anti-inflammatory medications are another common treatment for toothaches. By targeting inflammation, these kinds of medications can help alleviate toothache pain caused by swelling.

Homeopathic Treatments

Don't like OTC medications? You may want to try homeopathic remedies for toothaches. They may even be lurking in your pantry or kitchen cabinets. When applied to the tooth, a cold compress can help numb the pain while also reducing swelling and inflammation. Constricting the blood vessels slows the flow of blood to the painful area of the body. In rare cases, salt wat rinses can provide temporary relief from toothaches, clean out infected areas, loosen food and loosen debris. Clove oil is also a popular remedy for toothache and can be used as an antiseptic. The oil has also got a natural anesthetic, eugenol, which numbs anything it encounters. Peppermint's menthol content has been used as a toothache remedy because it has numbing properties. Hydrogen peroxide contains an antiseptic effect. But it goes beyond removing bacteria, it attacks them. The antibacterial and antimicrobial properties of garlic make it popular as a home remedy for toothache. When cloves are chewed, crushed, or sliced, they release the compound allicin, which is responsible for the properties. The aloe vera plant is a natural remedy for toothaches that also helps in cleaning and soothing the gums.
