What to Do if a Filling Comes Loose

Fillings can be made from a variety of materials, including gold, amalgam, composite resin, or ceramic. While fillings are generally durable, they can sometimes come loose. If this happens to you, it's important to take action promptly to prevent further damage to your tooth.

What to Do if You Lose a Filling

If you lose a filling, the first thing you should do is call your dentist and make an appointment. In the meantime, there are a few things you can do to protect your tooth:

•  Avoid chewing on the affected side of your mouth. This will help to prevent further damage to the tooth and the surrounding tissues.
•  Rinse your mouth with warm salt water. This will help to clean the area and reduce the risk of infection.
•  Place a piece of sugar-free gum over the area where the filling was. This will help to protect the tooth and keep it from becoming sensitive.
