Dental bonding is a cosmetic dental procedure used to improve your smile. In this process, your dental practitioner covers chipped teeth with resin materials that look just like your teeth. This helps alter their shape, size, or color. The main difference between this process and other restoration options, such as veneers and crowns, is that dental bonding is fully reversible.
When Is Dental Bonding Done?
Dental bonding is used in specific situations that require restoration. A dentist will recommend bonding to hide chips or cracks in your teeth. You may also use bonding to conceal tooth discoloration, fill in gaps and spaces between your teeth, and lengthen their appearance. In rare cases, dental bonding is applied to alter the shape of the teeth.
Dental Bonding Procedure
The dental bonding procedure can be completed within one session. Normally, bonding should take about 30 minutes to one hour. During your dental bonding procedure, your dentist will choose a shade of composite material that appears similar in color to your teeth.
The dentist will then prepare the tooth surface. Your tooth is roughened, and a conditioning liquid is applied to enhance the bonding process. After this, the dentist will apply the composite resin material. The putty-like resin material is used, shaped, and smoothed to achieve the desired shape.
After applying the composite resin, the material is cured using a special curing light. The resin is hardened, bonding it to the surface of your tooth. Your dentist then polishes your tooth, making any final adjustments to achieve a natural-looking shine.
Healing and Care After Bonding
Following dental bonding, maintaining proper oral hygiene is crucial to preserve a healthy and radiant smile. Remember to brush your teeth at least twice daily using a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, and floss between your teeth once a day. Additionally, make sure to schedule regular check-ups and cleanings with your dentist to keep your oral health in check.
